Field Fence Types
Rural fencing has to do a real job: keep animals in, keep deer out of the garden, or just mark where your land ends. Each of these handles that job differently.
Best for: Pastures, livestock, and long property lines over rough ground.
Woven wire mesh stretched between posts, with braced wood corners that keep the wire tight. It follows hills and dips, and it covers big distances for less than any other permanent fence.
Best for: Road frontage, driveways, and the classic farm look.
Three horizontal wood rails on wood posts. It’s the fence you picture along a country road. It marks your property and dresses up the frontage, but on its own it won’t hold small animals.
Best for: Horse and pet areas where you want the wood look and a secure barrier.
Wood posts and a top rail with wire mesh below. You get the look of a rail fence, and the mesh keeps animals from slipping between the rails.
Best for: Keeping deer and animals out of a garden or orchard.

Barbed wire is still the most economical way to fence cattle over a lot of ground, and we install it. It also goes along the top of woven wire to keep animals from leaning over and flattening the fence. Barbed wire isn’t a good fit for horses, which do better with rail or woven wire fencing.

Woven wire field fence is the most common choice because the mesh keeps animals from pushing through. Cattle fences often add barbed wire along the top. Horses do better with rail-and-wire fencing, since barbed wire can injure them.
